Day 9 - A Fic You Read to Feel Down [The Themes]

The world must be coming to an end or something if I'm posting more than once a day *shock horror* =O
Don't worry, I don't think it'll be a regular occurrence; I don't tend to be very productive at the best of times and it certainly won't happen when I'm done with this challenge!

Speaking of, time to get back on topic.
Now, if yesterday was difficult because I had no idea where to start today was definitely much worse, if only because I had far too many ideas for what to post. I have - with much internal debate - managed to just about narrow it down to 9 (from the initial 50+ I probably had up in tabs orz What does it say about my reading habits? ^^' ).

Also, you'll probably notice the lack of Berlin Wall fics? No, I haven't lost my taste for Berlin Wall angst; I don't think that's even possible. It's just that I've pretty much decided which ones are going to go under which title, so I thought I could have a little more variety in today's picks.

Title: Ethics of Attraction
Author: [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz
Fandom: Merlin
Rating: T
Prompt: Arthur/Merlin, AU. Arthur is a young, promising lawyer. He needs to win his next case to get a job at the best law office in town. Of course, being Arthur, he thinks he's the best man out there :P Merlin is waiting in prison for his trial (arrested for don't-know-what-but-something-not-too-serious). Arthur is assigned to Merlin's case as a public defender.

Why?
Despite this being pretty famous in fandom I only stumbled across it recently when reading something on Fanlore.org; it definitely deserves a place here despite the fact that I've only read it once so far and was a runner-up at the Spring 2010 Merlin Slash Awards in the "Arthur/Merlin Fanfiction" category Best Angst.
And I can certainly see why.
What was supposed to be a very simple case turns out to be something very very large-scaled and Arthur's loyalties are tugged all over the place; on one side there's his father, on another is Morgana and her meddling, he's trying to impress Drake to get that job - though as he gets further into the case it's not the only reason any more.  The further into the fic you get, the more heart wrenching it becomes, and reading all of the court proceedings is really interesting and doesn't bog down the plot at all. Really really well written.

Title: Dispatch To The Sea Floor
Author: Sowing Poppies
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Rating: M
Summary: Akuroku. High school. Roxas's dad is a total dick, his academic career is going nowhere, and sometimes, from certain angles, his best friend looks hot enough to kiss. It's strange. This year is starting to feel like the last.

Why?
I like how this piece isn't linear; it works really well with the content of the fic. Axel and Roxas' relationship is played out wonderfully - it's so very them - with the way that Roxas' world seems to be shaking itself to pieces around him with how his life at home with his dad is. I won't say much more as I'll probably give stuff away, but it kind of leaves you feeling numb.

Title: Like Sleeping
Author: [livejournal.com profile] chokethewind
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Rating: T
Summary: Going through the stunted motions of living isn’t the same as being alive.

Why?
This one's really subtle, and that's one of the things that makes me love it so much. It's told from two perspectives, switching between Roxas and Axel, and can be a little confusing but it's all explained by the end and just... it's like a punch to the gut. But in the best way possible. Underlying all of the angst is a kind of wry, resined sense of humour.

Title: No Tomorrows
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kiyala
Fandom: Ace Attorney
Rating: T
Summary: He'll propose tomorrow, he tells himself. Until his tomorrows stop.

Why?
I don't tend to read a lot of fic with Godot/Mia or Diego/Mia, and I can't remember how I stumbled across this ficlet but it's short and sweet in the sense that it's exactly the right length, and this one is filled with regret and longing.

Title: Frozen
Author: Anon
Fandom: Ace Attorney
Rating: M
Prompt: What I want is for someone to find another person in a freezer, (a dead body, or an abused person perhaps) and a serious case to evolve.

When the needle finally touched the large, white E, Phoenix couldn’t help but sob a little.

Why?
While the picture/comic that inspired this prompt is very light hearted, the prompt and fic itself is most certainly not.
It's a very intense read, thick with suspense and trauma which is handled very well; the psychological side of being stuck in a freezer was shown brilliantly, leaving chills down my spine and my throat tight, and Edgeworth's discoveries as he strived to find the ones responsible had me at the edge of my seat.

Title: Divine Intervention
Author: Twilight Rose2
Fandom: Axis Powers Hetalia
Rating: M
Summary: AU. Francis was looking for a sign, something that would show him that there was some light at the end of the miserable tunnel that was his life. An Englishman claiming he was an angel was not what he was expecting. FrUK

Why?
This one's absolutely lovely; we start off with Francis, dissatisfied with life and absolutely miserable until Arthur shows up to give him a kick up the arse to get his life back on track. As you can imagine there's plenty of snarking, and the romance in this is the sweetest kind. You may then wonder why I read it to feel down? I suggest you read it yourself to find out so that I don't give you any spoilers - you definitely won't regret it!

Title: It's Not Supposed To Be This Hard
Author: [livejournal.com profile] semebay
Fandom: Axis Powers Hetalia
Rating: T
Summary: There are heroes, and there are villains. One man finds himself in the middle, harassed by a self-proclaimed hero, but trying his hardest to stay with the faeries that want nothing more than to see his life crumble around him. AU, Dark, evilfaeries

Why?
Usually when we see something about the fae and England, we expect the cute unicorns and flying mint bunny that we see in the anime and manga; this fic takes a look at the traditionally dark side of the fae. Arthur has spent all his life surrounded by the fae - doesn't know life without them - but when Alfred pushes his way into his life, even knowing how malicious these creatures are, Arthur is less than appreciative.
The pacing in this is brilliant - not too fast or too slow - and we see the fae becoming more and more destructive, how this affects Arthur and Alfred's involvement in the whole thing. I highly recommend this and its sequels (which can be found on Lj).

Title: What The Heart Forgets
Author: [livejournal.com profile] halflight007
Fandom: Axis Powers Hetalia
Rating: M
Summary: What Arthur lost when he sacrificed himself to save the people beneath the Nations, and what he gained in return.

Why?
This is a series of fics in the same universe, and is completely heartbreaking. It's so bitter-sweet, as Francis gets to know Arthur again, and the torment in Arthur's heart as he carries the burden of memories from before.
In this AU, the nations are now human, and the only one with memories of before this change being Arthur himself.

Title: Small Town Lies
Author: Anon
Fandom: Axis Powers Hetalia
Rating: M
Summary: Alfred and Arthur go to a very homophobic private school. Alfred has been Arthur's tormentor for longer than he can remember, so when he gets the chance to get his revenge on Alfred, he takes it by telling the school that Alfred's gay. At first he enjoys it, thinking that Alfred deserves it for all he's done, but when a group of students takes it too far, things start to get ugly fast.

Why?
If you know me well, you know that I don't tend to cry when reading or watching things, no matter how sad they usually are, and have often been told (jokingly, most of the time) that I must have a heart of stone or something.
This fic? It's the closest I've ever got; you know, full blown tight throat and burning eyes with the only thing left for the tears to fall.
I remember when I started reading this I kept asking myself why I  continued to read it - still do sometimes - as this is exactly what the prompt says; there is bullying, there is rape (which I tend to stay as far away from as possible, and I did skip over that particular scene when reading this fic), there is guilt by the bucket load...
We're shown relationships breaking, contorting, forming... and it's likely to hit you in some way or another. Despite my mixed feelings to reading it initially, I can't wait to read the final two parts and see how things end for them all.

My head kind of hurts so I'm going to come back and finish with the 'why's' later =.=/
Edit 6/5/11: Finally updated this with reasons! Sorry that took so long orz
